You Can Win in Life: The search for a legacy
It is an important and admirable human desire to create a legacy: to create something bigger than ourselves, something that will have an impact on others’ lives, something that will last beyond us. But what does it take to create a legacy? Sometimes legacy seems like such an elusive and impossible thing to achieve. As such, the desire to create a legacy can take us on a search that is overwhelming with no end in sight.
As I reflect on a 13th-century building that my husband and I stayed at in Barcelona in the Gothic Quarter, I wonder who the builders were and if they knew that their work would last for centuries. I doubt that the people who built these magnificent buildings think that people of many generations will continue to live within those walls. If anything, I feel that these builders thought that they were creating something useful, like a family home, for their family or their clients. We don’t know who these men are yet their legacy stands.
This makes me realize that perhaps creating a legacy is not about finding something so big, but it is about doing what we can, today, to create something immediately useful and productive, for the people around us. We will never know but perhaps doing just that can create lasting impact.
